Another Year, Another Ice Storm
|
For a third season, Tulsa has been hit with a winter ice storm. Although not as severe in the immediate Tulsa area, it did close schools for three days and made for hazardous driving. Other parts of Oklahoma were affected by downed tree limbs and power outages and are still recovering, as are communities in other states like Arkansas and Kentucky. From you, our partners, we would like to hear how you fared with this winter storm. Were you adequately prepared? If you represent a company or nonprofit organization, were you affected by the ice storm and did you have contingency plans in place to deal with any problems that arose? Did anyone using energy efficient "green" strategies find it helpful in their disaster preparations? Let us know by emailing info@tulsapartners.org.

Resilient and Ready Children's Workshops Continue, Receive More Grant Funding
|
The George Kaiser Family Foundation has provided $2500 in grant funding to your Tulsa Partners to continue the Resilient and Ready Children's workshops developed by Save The Children. This funding will allow your partners to provide training to 150 children in the Tulsa area, joining about 1100 children who have already received this training and been given disaster preparedness backpacks. In addition, thanks to cost savings in backpack purchases and the donation of printed materials, remaining funds from a grant by the Cox Connects Foundation will be used to add 70 additional children to the training calendar in the coming months. Meanwhile the workshops have continued, and were offered to day camps and child care facilities with elementary school aged children over the end of year holidays. Plans are in place to arrange for these workshops during the annual McReady campaign in April. For more information on this project and how you can become involved, please contact Penni Chandler at 632-0044 or at penni.chandler@tulsapartners.org. |

Thank You Received from Captain Brett Bailey, Tulsa Police Department
|
|
You, through Tulsa Partners, supported Captain Brett Bailey in attending a one-week Homeland Security Training in Israel this past November. The course is offered through Security Solutions International, a private company that provides frontline training to law enforcement, first responders, security professionals and policy leaders. Your Tulsa Partners Board of Directors authorized reimbursement for the flight from Tulsa to Newark, N.J., from where the class flew to Israel. Captain Bailey has been with the Tulsa Police Department since 1988. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Safety Management from Northeastern State University and a Master's degree in Fire and Emergency Management from Oklahoma State University.
Brett has served as an instructor in many areas of disaster training, training for the Police Department and as an adjunct instructor for the Oklahoma Office of Emergency Management (OEM) and Office of Homeland Security (OHS). He has taught over 1500 responders around the State of Oklahoma all aspects of preparedness and response to disasters and terrorism. Captain Bailey is one of the founding members and current Team Commander of the Tulsa Police Department's Disaster Response Team (DaRT). He sits on many disaster-related committees as the Police Department's representative: Local Emergency Planning Committee, Citizen Corps, Technical Advisory Group to the Mayor's Homeland Security Task Force and the Terrorism Early Warning (TEW) Group Planning Committee. Brett was one of the original members of Project Impact, which later transitioned to Tulsa Partners. As such, he has been involved in the preparation of many emergency response plans for the City of Tulsa and Tulsa Police Department. Brett has expressed his thanks, and has committed to offering a presentation on the best practices he learned through this training. We will keep you informed on when such a presentation will be scheduled. On behalf of Captain Bailey, thank you for your support!

A Message from Bob Roberts, Millennium Center Program Manager
|
Dear Colleagues, It has been my honor and privilege to serve as the Program Manager on the Millennium Center project for the last couple of years. The chance to participate in this cutting edge endeavor that brings together two of the passions I feel so strongly about - environmental responsibility and disaster safety - has meant a great deal to me. But considerations require that I leave this position and move on in some other areas of my life. As you may know, my work over the last 20 years has been in the area of disaster mitigation and response planning, and splitting my time between two positions has not been entirely fair to either of them, so I'll be returning to full time with R.D. Flanagan and Associates to work on developing mitigation plans for our Oklahoma communities. There's a lot of work in that arena coming up, and it needs more time than I've been giving it. I will remain as a volunteer with Tulsa Partners, participating in the Millennium Center, the Disaster Resistant Business Council, and other TPi programs where I can offer assistance. That means I'll still get to interact with the fantastic people who are active in this project. I look forward to staying involved with everyone. And I encourage all our readers, if you believe in the importance of living green and safe, to provide your support to this most important mission. We can't succeed without your help. Looking to the future,
Sincerely,
Bob Roberts

Be a Partner - and Serve!
|
Nonprofit organizations depend on volunteers to fulfill their mission. In tough economic times, it is the work of these volunteers that can make the difference between an organization meeting its mission or not. We want you to work with your fellow partners and build a disaster-resistant and sustainable community. Below is a list of current service opportunities and committees that are being formed. Let us know if you are interested in serving in any of these capacities by emailing info@tulsapartners.org. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES We currently have two pressing volunteer needs: Resilient and Ready Volunteer instructors needed
This workshop, developed by Save The Children, exposes elementary school aged children to what it means to be prepared for disasters. A children's preparedness backpack is provided to each child who participates, and is also given information to take home to their parents and families. A background check is required, and presenters must be comfortable engaging children. We particularly need volunteers who are available on weekdays during school hours. Please contact Penni Chandler at 632-0044 or email at penni.chandler@tulsapartners.org . Volunteers needed to help with 2009 Home and Garden ShowVolunteers are needed to help with Tulsa Partners' Home and Garden Show Booth. The Home and Garden Show will be at the QuikTrip Center from March 12-15. Shifts will generally be scheduled from 3 to 4 hours. Training will be provided to volunteers on the materials in the booth, which will focus on disaster-resistant and green construction and renovation. Please contact us at info@tulsapartners.org if you are interested in this volunteer opportunity. PARTNER AND PROGRAM COMMITTEES Committee assignments will be filled based on the expertise needed on each committee to fulfill its assigned tasks. An application or interview may be required. Those who request a particular committee but are not chosen may be asked to serve on other committees. PARTNER COMMITTEES Fundraising and Partnership Development
This committee assists with engaging inkind and financial support of corporate partners, foundations and grantor organizations. It may also create special fundraising events. Marketing and CommunicationThis committee is responsible for developing strategies to communicate our successes and needs with our partners and with the media, through our website, newsletters and other forms of social networking. Planning and Preparedness Workshops and TrainingThis committee coordinates our existing workshops such as our Disaster Management for Long Term Care Facilities Workshops, A Day Without Hospitals Workshop, and Resilient and Ready Children's Workshops. The primary role of the committee is to be sure these workshops meet existing needs in the communities we serve, and to review stakeholder requests for other planning and preparedness workshops, such as workshops for service providers to special needs populations. Hazard Mitigation/Emergency Management Planning and ImplementationThis committee is meant to focus on implementing hazard mitigation planning and demonstration projects, and to support local emergency management as requested. Volunteer and Partner Recognition This committee supports recognition activities for volunteers and partners, including choosing awardees for the Spring Nania Awards (for local corporate entities) and the Fall Annual Meeting awards (for individuals). PROGRAM COMMITTEES Millennium Center Steering Committee (with subcommittees)
This committee oversees Millennium Center for Green and Safe Living project, which includes multiple subcommittees, meant to support our community living safely and in harmony with nature. Disaster Resistant Business CouncilThis council, made up of a variety of stakeholders, oversees promoting business continuity and emergency planning in businesses and nonprofits. As with other committees, the council limits new members based on "holes" or needs within the council for expertise, but is open to training people to assist with their business continuity workshops.

Woody's Web
|
Hmmm...Let's see now. I've been asked to share with you all some of the various "jewels" of information that I have run across in my never-ending research endeavors. I say "some", because, as anyone who has spent any time working with me knows, I tend to find all sorts of things on that playground known as "the web". Hopefully you will be find some of these links informative, useful, and perhaps a bit entertaining. You just never know where projects take me!
One of the areas I've been diving into lately is one of our old-time favorites - Shelter In Place. Sooo much information is out there on this topic, it was a bit overwhelming! Here are just a few links...Keep in mind - most of this information is geared towards Sheltering in Place for a chemical/hazardous material event.
For tips on being prepared for Winter Weather emergencies, you could visit any number of sites. I like to check out what other communities are using:
Hmmm...come to think of it -- a lot of this information seems to be the same! That's GREAT! We like it when everyone is sending out the same message!!
If you'd like to see the latest statistics and information regarding the recent Winter Storm, as well as some very valuable preparedness tips, you can always turn to the Oklahoma Emergency Management team at http://www.ok.gov/OEM/index.html .
Now what about something you can REALLY use? Ok -- here are some good weather tracking sites...
http://kamala.cod.edu/svr/ Brings up all active Warnings...very entertaining in the Spring, since Tornado Warnings all show up in Red! The warnings posted here are from all over the country, so you can keep an eye on all members of your family! Simply click on a Warning and you will see all specifics for it.
Well, that's about it for this time. Please remember to keep a good thought for the hundreds of thousands of people struggling in the bitter cold without power across the Midwest. A report on 2/3 reported more than 318,000 still without power, with 200,000 in Kentucky and 100,000 in Arkansas. May they find the strength and determination demonstrated by woman featured in this article.
Until next time, JoAnn Woody
